Is the organic food on our supermaket shelves really organic?

Free range, organic food, fair trade etc – all nice marketing buzz words, but how do they actual control this and is anything being done to ensure these foods are really what they say they are?

ITS PROBABLY A LOAD OF COBBLERS …BUT THEY KNOW IF THEY PUT ORGANIC ON SOMETHING THEY CAN CHARGE WHAT THEY LIKE

Is organic farming a realistic alternative when the population is so large??

I recently heard a radio interview with the head of a large farming co-operative in the mid-west who said that while there is no doubt that organic farming is better for the land, and does produce healthier consumer products, it simply is too exspensive, labor intensive and un-predicatable in the amount produced on an annual basis to ever replace the methods used in commercial farming. Basically, it could not produce a sufficient amount of food to feed the people it would need to. I am interested to hear how proponents for having the US go totally organic respond to that statement. Thanks.
Hmmm…some interesting points. I tend to agree that going totally organic would cause major problems in the lower income brackets…they simply could not afford to purchase the produce or have the space to grow it on their own. And I do agree that it is time to force commerical farmers to be more responsible in how they grow and in the end results of what they grow..this world is too big and too many families are hungry to justify throwing away any produce that is usable. Thanks for the input!

Yes, anyone interested in organic farming can have a tour of Prince Charles’ organic farm and Highgrove. Highgrove’s website includes all the information about booking a reservation for a visit. The times that the estate is open to visits is quite limited, and I believe I read somewhere that there is a five-year waiting list.

In addition to the shop located on the estate, there is also apparently some sort of tea-shop set up…as there is tour offered which includes afternoon tea.

Groups of 25 are taken through the estate, and I would imagine that if you were part of a group of interest to the Prince, he might arrange to say hello to all of you.

What do you prefer Gerber Organic Baby food or just the regular stuff?

Want to know which is best to buy

I prefer the regular stuff. The idea of organic is nice, and I have bought it before. Not because it was organic, but because there was a larger variety.

I’ve posted a link below to an excellent article re: the pros and cons of buying organic. Apparently organic farmers DO use pesticides. Interesting…

At any rate, I don’t buy organic foods for my sons unless it’s something that just looks good and is different. (Stonyfield Farms makes the BEST yogurt, and my two boys are nuts about it.)

inexpensive natural/organic/home remedy for facial or body acne?

I have PCOS, which has acne as one symptom. It’s not as sever as it could be, but I’d still like to clear it up. I’m not too into medicine, and also do not want to go on birth control or anything to get rid of this particular symptom. Any suggestions for natural home remedies or inexpensive organic products that work well for facial acne? I also have some acne around my body. Thanks!

I watched a programme on QVC and one of the products that they shouted about was propolis. They sold out of this product, however I looked at the reports which were written by customers and I was very impressed and it is said to be good for acne. Thankfully I was able to buy it on ebay. My legs had been in a dreadful state for several months and I had tried various creams etc., after just two applications I could see the improvement. It is cheaper on QVC and they may have supplies in your part of the world, I live in the U.K.

I am going to Portland, Oregon from Australia for a visit in a week or so. I need to know where a good health food store near the airport is. I need to buy Swedish Bitters, as well as high dose calcium and Vit D.

Near the airport? That’s tough…there really aren’t any..I work out there. There are TONS of health food stores in town, but the airport isn’t really close to much…New Seasons is the best health food store in town…after that, there is Whole Foods, Wild Oats, and many independent places. Just about every Fred Meyer store has a good health food section with a good selection of vitamins. There is one on NE 102nd ave. 111 NE 102nd Ave…it may be your best bet for near the airport. Otherwise, go into town or think about bringing those things with you.
